From September 2025, the NHS will begin sending normal results from the NHS cervical screening programmedigitally through the NHS App.
- Normal results are those where patients are placed back into recall within the programme and do not require referral to colposcopy.
- Patients will receive an NHS App notification, and if notifications are not switched on, they may also receive an SMS reminder to check the NHS App.
- If the message is not read within 72 hours or the patient does not have the NHS App, a letter will be sent as a failsafe.
- Abnormal results (those requiring referral to colposcopy) will continue to be delivered by post for the time being.
- Some patients may see their results earlier through the NHS App under GP Health Records, or may receive a colposcopy appointment digitally before formal letters arrive.
We encourage all patients to download the NHS App and enable notifications: www.nhs.uk/nhs-app
