Breast Screening (Mammography)

Government Programme

Mammography is offered to all females between the ages of 50 and 70 years by the local Breast Screening Unit every three years. This test uses X-rays to look for cancers that are too small to see or feel

Why It’s Important

Breast screening can help find breast cancer at an early stage when it’s too small to see or feel. Early detection means treatment is more likely to be successful, which can save lives

Who Should Attend

When you reach the age of 50, you will be invited to attend screening when your postcode area is next routinely covered, which may be sometime later. If you wish to continue after 70 years, please ask your doctor to arrange this

How the Test is Conducted

The tests are carried out by the local Breast Screening Unit. You will receive an invitation to book your mammogram appointment. The screening involves taking X-rays of each breast, which are then examined for any signs of cancer.

Booking Your Appointment

You will receive an invitation to book your breast screening appointment. Please contact the local Breast Screening Unit to schedule your test. For more information on breast screening, visit the NHS Breast Screening Guide.
